How to Properly Prep Natural Nails Before Application
Learn the essential steps of natural nail preparation to ensure a long-lasting, flawless application.
Natural nail preparation is the most important step for a successful application. Poor preparation is the number one cause of lifting and client dissatisfaction. Here is how to do it right.
Why Preparation Is Essential
90% of durability issues come from insufficient preparation. No matter how good your gel or acrylic is, if the natural nail is not properly prepped, the application will not last.
Step 1: Cuticle Push-Back
Use a metal or orangewood pusher to gently push back the cuticles. Work gently to avoid damaging the nail matrix. Remove small dead skin with cuticle nippers.
Step 2: Surface Filing
Lightly buff the nail surface with a 180-grit file. The goal is to create micro-adhesion, not to thin the nail. Light, even strokes are all you need.
Step 3: Dust Removal
Use a nail brush to remove all filing dust. This often-neglected step is crucial for product adhesion.
Step 4: Dehydration and Primer
Apply a dehydrator to eliminate residual moisture, then a primer suited to your system (gel or acrylic). Let it dry completely before applying your product.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-filing the natural nail surface
- Skipping the dust removal step
- Applying too much primer
- Touching the prepped nail before application
Meticulous preparation is the secret to applications that last 3 to 4 weeks without any issues.
